Learning Objectives

By the end of this class, students will be able to:

  • Properly develop an idea into a viable business

  • Properly cultivate and integrate essential soft skills

  • Understand business models

  • Apply learning to create a new business concept

Course Structure

Cultivate your entrepreneurial endeavor and take it from concept to ready-for-launch with a complete Business Model Canvas. What you create could be entered in Business Plan Competitions or get privately funded, so treat this like the opportunity that it is. Evaluation is primarily team-based, but individual effort will also be factored in. You may choose to be a sole-founder, but be aware that you’ll be evaluated relative to the strength of the other teams. No brownie points given for going solo.

On designated weeks, your team will give a presentation of no more than 10 minutes on how you applied the DE steps to your business concept. This presentation should evidence advancement of your idea through real world experimentation. Get out from behind your screen and put yourself and your idea under the microscope. Effort and creativity in presenting your work will be noted. Presentations will be followed with a 5-minute Q&A period.

Weekly: Each week, you are expected to come to class prepared, having read the designated chapters (“steps”) in the textbook according to the Class Schedule. You will do a short presentation on how your team implemented the previously taught steps each week.

You will turn in your completed DE Toolbox steps by Tuesday at 11:59pm BEFORE the Friday of class (see Class Schedule).

You will also have small individual assignments due by Tuesday at 11:59pm BEFORE the Friday of class (see Class Schedule).

Class Participation: You will receive points (up to 250 total) for in-class participation. Participation includes: class attendance, bringing current event topics to class, asking questions, answering questions, and engaging in class discussion.

Final Project: Your team’s final project will be a completed Business Model Canvas (BMC). You will also have a Final Presentation on the last day of class, presenting your BMC to the rest of the class.

Attendance: Since this is a team-centric course, your lack of attendance will be readily apparent. Don’t let your team down unless you absolutely have to.
